What this is

We run Google Ads for US small businesses. Most of them are independent auto repair shops, in places like Boise, Salt Lake, Wichita and Raleigh. The rest are a mix: a med spa, a pool service company, a forklift dealer, a financial advisor, an e-commerce brand, a home detailing company.

We are hiring one person to run the media buying across all of it. About eighteen accounts today, heading toward forty.

Read this part carefully, because it is what makes the job unusual: this is not one big account. It is twenty to forty small ones. A typical shop spends between $1,000 and $4,000 a month. The largest spends about $7,800.

That changes the work completely. At these budgets you rarely have enough data to test your way to an answer. Forty clicks and no conversion is not evidence that a keyword is dead. Most of this job is making sound decisions on thin data, at volume, without fooling yourself. If your experience is one account spending six figures a month where you could run a clean experiment every fortnight, this will be an uncomfortable fit and we would rather you knew that now.

You will not be an account manager

We are hiring one of those separately. You are not running monthly review calls, chasing invoices, or managing expectations. You own performance.

You do talk to shop owners for one thing: technical discovery. When a new shop comes on, you interview the owner about what they actually do and do not do, their service radius, their seasonality. That conversation produces the service definition our automation runs on, and it is the most valuable thirty minutes in the whole onboarding. Get it wrong and the account generates months of avoidable work. We will not hand that to someone who does not understand the media.

The automation covers part of the book, not all of it

On the auto repair side we built a control system that reviews search terms, applies negative keywords inside guardrails, moves bids and budgets within hard drift limits, logs every lever change with attribution, and flags drift before it reaches the numbers. On a normal week it proposes about two thousand changes and asks a human about thirty.

The other accounts are run hands-on. No controllers, no auto-apply. Several of them are the more interesting problems in the business, and they are where most of your build work will be. We are telling you this up front because the automation is a genuine advantage and we would rather you not arrive expecting it to cover everything.

So nobody here spends their day pulling search-term reports on the automated side. What is left there is the deciding. Is this negative keyword blocking a competitor or blocking real demand? Is this campaign underspending because the budget is low or because the query pool is exhausted? Did conversions actually stop, or did the tracking break? Those calls are the job, and getting them wrong is expensive in a way no guardrail catches. On the hands-on side, you are doing the work yourself.

What you would own

What we pay

A base plus a growth fee that rises as the book does. No bonus scheme, no discretionary pool, nothing to argue about at review time. You can work out your own pay on a napkin.

Base: $2,000 per month. Paid in USD as an independent contractor.

Book fee, and it tiers upward:

Most places pay you less per account as the book grows, on the logic that scale makes each one easier. We do the opposite. The accounts past twenty are the ones you will have built yourself, and we would rather you want the next one than quietly resist it.

There is no separate retention bonus, on purpose. You are paid per account you run, so an account that leaves takes its fee with it. Keeping clients is already how you get paid, and adding a bonus on top would just be paying you twice for the same thing.

We publish all of this because we would rather you self-select than spend three calls discovering we are far apart. If you want a flat salary with no variable component, we are not the right fit, and that is a fair thing to want.

Who we are looking for

Nice to have: Claude Code or similar AI tooling in your daily workflow, Local Services Ads, Performance Max at small budgets, Looker Studio, Spanish, experience working inside an agency's own tooling rather than only the Google Ads interface.

We do not care about Google Ads certifications. We will ask you to walk us through a real account instead.

This is probably not for you if

Hours

Full time, and we mean available for a full week. Our clients are mostly in US Mountain and Central time, with a few on the coasts. You need to overlap US business hours, roughly 9am to 3pm Mountain. From most of Latin America that is an ordinary working day.

Being straight about the workload: at today's book of eighteen accounts, the steady-state work runs closer to thirty hours a week than forty. That will not last, and it is not what we are hiring for. Getting to forty accounts means roughly twenty-two onboardings, and each one is a campaign build, a tracking setup and a service definition written from scratch. We are hiring for the full week and we expect you available for it, not for the lighter version that happens to fit an early month.

How we work

To apply

Apply through this posting and answer these five in your application. Skip the cover letter. Specific beats polished, and a real number beats a confident adjective.

  1. A campaign has a $220 target CPA and is actually producing conversions at $125. What is happening, and what do you do?

  2. Google Ads reports 30 conversions last month. The client's booking system shows 5 real jobs from ads. Which number is right?

  3. An account spends $1,200 a month. One keyword has 40 clicks and no conversions. Do you pause it? Why or why not?

  4. Which AI tools do you use in your work today, and what have you actually built or automated with them? Also, what do you think this job looks like in three years?

  5. Where you are based, and your monthly rate in USD.

Our process: a paid exercise on a real anonymized account (about 2 to 3 hours, we pay $150 whether or not we move forward), then two calls. Start to offer is usually three to four weeks.
