Software Quality Assurance Engineer

Responsibilities

Peraton is seeking an experienced Software Quality Assurance Engineer to independently execute and take expanded ownership of quality assurance and test automation activities on the BASIS program. Operating with minimal supervision, the QA Engineer carries direct responsibility for automated test design and delivery, test documentation ownership, defect lifecycle management, and security testing integration — all in support of the program's automation-first QA mandate. All quality assurance activities must be automated.

The selected candidate will independently manage test automation deliverables across Agile sprint cycles, contribute to QA strategy discussions, support junior engineers, and interface with developers and Government stakeholders on quality metrics and release readiness across the deployment pipeline.

This is a 100% remote role.

Test Automation Development & Strategy

• Independently design, develop, implement, and maintain automated test scripts for unit, integration, regression, and end-to-end functional testing across the application portfolio.
• Ensure all automated test cases are executable by the end of each Agile sprint and fully integrated into the Government-managed DevSecOps pipeline with minimal oversight.
• Drive and apply Test-Driven Development (TDD) methodology — authoring test cases prior to code development and collaborating closely with software engineers to align test coverage with functional requirements.
• Lead the Test Automation State Assessment for assigned application areas; produce assessment reports with automation completion estimates.
• Own the automation of adjacent legacy test cases per Government-approved schedules to systematically expand regression coverage across the portfolio.
• Evaluate automation approaches and recommend improvements to test architecture, reusability, and pipeline integration within the Government-provided automation framework.
• Serve as a technical resource and mentor to junior QA engineers on automation best practices, test script development, and tool usage.

Test Planning & Documentation

• Develop and own Requirements Traceability Matrices (RTMs) at the end of each development cycle/sprint, ensuring full traceability and complete testing coverage of all functional and non-functional requirements.
• Document all test activities, execution results, and defect findings within the Government-provided Test Case Management System with accuracy and completeness.
• Independently prepare Testing Reports, Release Notes (Draft and Final), and Software Version Descriptions (SVDs) per release cadence requirements.

Quality Assurance & Defect Management

• Enforce and monitor hard contractual quality thresholds with zero defects released to production.
• Lead defect triage and root cause analysis in JIRA; manage the full escalation workflow to product teams with complete documentation and submit JIRA tickets prior to all escalations.
• Own and submit weekly defect escalation reports to customers and the Government Product Owner.

Section 508 / Accessibility Testing

• Lead Section 508 / WCAG 2.0 Level AA accessibility testing at planned intervals throughout the development lifecycle, ensuring continuous integration of accessibility compliance into the QA process.
• Own preparation of Voluntary Product Accessibility Templates (VPATs) including test results, remediation reports, and conformance level documentation for all applicable deliverables.
• Report Section 508 compliance testing status and metrics.

Performance & Environment Testing

• Lead stress and load testing activities in the ProdSim (Production Simulation) environment; prepare and submit detailed test schedules for Government approval and execute per approved schedule.
• Coordinate and support Disaster Recovery (DR) testing activities in collaboration with technical and operations teams.
• Support Independent Verification & Validation (IV&V) of all application prior to production deployment; ensure all IV&V findings are tracked and resolved.

Agile / DevSecOps Participation

• Actively contribute to and help facilitate Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, backlog grooming, daily stand-ups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives.
• Maintain sprint-level defect tracking, test case completion status, and burn-down metrics in JIRA; provide QA-focused sprint reporting to program leadership.
• Enforce quality gates across the SDLC pipeline; flag and escalate non-conforming deliverables before stage promotion.
• Own and submit monthly Quality Status Report (QSR).

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience in software quality assurance, test automation engineering, or related software testing roles with BS/BA, 3 years with MS/MA
• Must be US CItizen
• Active Public Trust clearance
• Cybersecurity workforce certification (e.g., Security+, CASP+)
• Demonstrated hands-on experience designing and implementing automated test frameworks and scripts using tools such as Selenium, JUnit, TestNG, Cucumber, Python, Java, or equivalent.
• Working knowledge of Test-Driven Development (TDD) practices and their application within Agile sprint cycles.
• Proficiency with JIRA for defect tracking, sprint management, and reporting.
• Experience developing Requirements Traceability Matrices (RTMs), UAT plans, and formal testing documentation.
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and automated test integration within a DevSecOps environment.
• Experience with Section 508 / WCAG 2.0 Level AA accessibility testing and VPAT preparation.
• Strong communication and documentation skills; ability to report QA status and metrics to program leadership and Government stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

• ISTQB (International Software Testing Qualifications Board) Foundation or Advanced Level certification.
• Experience supporting DoD or Federal government IT programs with formal QA deliverable obligations.
• Familiarity with eMASS and Fortify Software Security Center for vulnerability tracking and POA&M management.
• Prior experience in or exposure to DEERS, TRICARE, or other DoD healthcare/benefits systems.
• Knowledge of NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5 security controls as they relate to application testing and compliance.
• Experience with performance/load testing tools and stress test execution in production-simulation environments.
• Familiarity with ServiceNow for incident management and tracking.
• Experience mentoring junior QA team members and reviewing test artifacts for quality and completeness.

Target Salary Range

$80,000 - $128,000. This represents the typical salary range for this position. Salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the individual’s experience, education, knowledge, skills, and competencies, as well as geographic location and business and contract considerations. Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay.
